Reducing our carbon footprint: creative pedagogy for sustainability.

BIGfoot littlefoot is a conventions based drama developed by Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre in 2009 that helps to answer the following key question:  What is a carbon footprint and how do we reduce ours in order to play our part in addressing climate change?

BIGfoot littlefoot was initially developed as a 90 minute workshop for grade three and four children involved in ‘Sustainable Jamboree’ a project where several schools wanted to raise awareness around the idea of reducing the ‘Carbon Footprint’ of their school and community. Since then, BIGfoot littlefoot has been presented to hundreds of primary and secondary students,  and for professional development to educators.

BIGfoot littlefoot is an engaging and light-spirited workshop that uses motivating and interactive drama-based teaching techniques to explore sustainability, including: teacher in role; freeze frames; soundscapes; creative games; and reflective pedagogy.  The workshop assists both teachers and students to develop a practical understanding of carbon footprints and related scientific concepts and empowers them to make more sustainable choices in their everyday life.

Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre has been given consistently positive feedback about how the powerful creative pedagogy demonstrated in BIGfoot littlefoot has helped children connect positively to environmental thinking.

BIGfoot littlefoot has been presented to both students and educators at…
