A Visual Representation of Learning for Sustainability

Nest explanation 150x150 The Nesting Model

The Nesting Model (see following page) is drawn from ‘systems theory’ and is used at PEEC to represent a number of important strands of Learning for Sustainability. Learning for Sustainability will provide positive change and development in four main ways:

  1. Personal mind/body well-being, health and ecological identity;
  2. Strong social and cultural relationships;
  3. Deep respectful connections to natural places and the community of life;
  4. New ways of living lightly and sustainably on the earth.
 The Nesting Model… provided a single concrete image or symbolic reference point – a ‘nest’ where individuals felt valued, protected and safe.

(Bereznicki, Brown, Toomey and Weston, 2008, p.88)

This model has been used successfully by many teachers over a number of years as part of a Storythread Values Project. They have found it to be an invaluable resource and reference point for knowledge and values discussions about how students are connected to the people and places around them.

This simple mental map works for students because it provides a touchstone for conversations and dialogue around the impact of their behaviour on others and the places around them. It is a visual representation of the knowledge and values that are explored in any Storythread Unit.

The nesting concept is so powerful. I’ve really connected with that sense of self, and then respect for others and respect for place because ultimately, that’s what is important in society.

I think it’s such a powerful concept to teach the kids … when they’re developing through life … because it links into so many things, it’s something you can always draw back on.
Year 7 Teacher Storythread Values Project 2009
This year the Storythread really had an effect on me. That talk about the nest and place and the values – I just thought “this is the way to go”. I just love the way it gets the kids in.
Year 2 Teacher Storythread Values Project 2009

Me talking about self, others and place has given my kids the same focus point by keeping the language similar, and that made them more confident.
